Up to this point, said working group had been researching free-space optical communication through laser beams, but this was abandoned within a few years of Estonia regaining its independence.

Rantelon was founded in 1995 by then Tallinn University of Technology Department of Radio and Communication Engineering professor Andres Taklaja and engineer Priit Kinks. Working with the American radio electronics company MITEQ and its foreign Estonian president Aksel Kiiss played an important role in the founding of the company.
Even now, 25 years later, both founders remain hard at work – now as the CEOs and owners of one of the most successful high-tech companies in Estonia. Most of all, even today an academic outlook valuing total professional engagement forms an important strand of the company’s DNA.

In 2019 Rantelon opened its spacious new research centre and factory. Modern production options have allowed the company to increase its capacity substantially and to continue its rapid growth. The company is established by Priit Kinks and Andres Taklaja from the Chair of Microwave Equipment. Their goal is to change the focus of microwave research from basic to more practical research and to earn income in addition to what the university is paying them.
Rantelon starts hiring students, who are able to earn a little extra alongside their studies.
